What are plans for the Oracle Collaborative Suite at NC State?

10/30/07

After consulting with the Calendar Steering Team, node managers, and the AITD, ITD decided to not upgrade our Oracle Calendar service to 10g. Overwhelming vendor issues and technical issues that the vendor was not addressing led to this decision. For more specifices, we recommend you read our migration page.

This decision does impact our plans on rolling out the OCS at NC State. In addition, NC State is once again looking to standardize on one calendar system; due to the note above, it will most likely not be Oracle Collaborative Suite. Please stay abreast of the email and calendar study by visiting the OIT Cal page.

=====

Plans are to roll out the Calendar component of the Oracle Collaborative Suite first. This tool is presently used on campus by about 5,000 users (a mix of faculty, staff, and students). We are working on rolling out Oracle calendar to all of campus, including students, sometime during the fall semester 2006. Then, Oracle Calendar will be available to everyone on campus with a Unity ID (faculty, staff and students). The exact schedule will be based on variables such as server and software upgrades. Track the progress of our rollout on the main Brickyard web page and / or subscribe to our mailing list brickyard_news (if the previous link does not work, subscribe by going to http://lists.ncsu.edu).
Web Conferencing will be the next component for NC State (after Oracle Calendar). This was chosen because much of the back-end, system, requirements will be put in place with the implementation with Oracle Calendar. Some work on Web Conferring will occur simultaneously with work on Oracle Calendar, but at this time, it is too early to speculate on when the Web Conferencing Tool might actually be available on campus. Similar to the calendar tool, however, Web Conferencing too will be available to everyone with a Unity ID.
There are no definite plans, presently, for further implementations. As the initial two products are rolled out, it will be possible to better gauge which Oracle Collaborative Suite tools would be the best next choice and to have a better idea of the requirements ( such financial resources required, hardware required, personnel required, support required, etc.) and to receive campus input of what is needed.

When will everyone have Oracle Collabrative Suite?

The calendar portion of this product should be ready for general use sometime during the fall semester 2006.

Can I set up a calendar for events?

This option is not currently available.

How did NC State make the decsision to institute a calendar program and how was the Oracle Colarborative Suite choosen?

NC State has been planning this implementation for several years. Information gathered from a 2000 study showed the needs and helped administrators determine what they would like in such a program. That study can be read here.
